Babies: Sleep Requirements
As a new mom, you probably wonder if your baby is getting enough sleep or sleeping too much. There are guidelines for what to expect, but of course can vary from a baby. Even if you had children before, each baby is different.
Newborns often sleep about 16-17 hours in a period of 24 hours. Most babies do not sleep through the night until at least three months. There are several reasons. First, their stomachs are very small and will be hungry faster especially if you are breast-feeding. Breast milk is much easier to digest than formula and your baby needs to eat more often, especially beginning.
Babies also have shorter sleep cycles than adults and more short sleep cycles. In general, however, a newborn should sleep about eight or nine hours during the day and 8 hours or overnight. There will be cycles 8:00, of course. At first, the sleeping time is very short.
As the child grows to about two years, still goes to sleep 13-14 hours but decreases the amount of sleep during the day of the month. In two years, your baby should sleep through the night with a two-hour nap during the day. Again, this varies with the child. Your baby may need a slightly longer nap or two short naps. At this age, however, try to discourage naps too late pm, as this may make it harder to get to sleep an hour later at bedtime.
Once your baby begins to regularly sleep throughout the night, parents are often dismayed when he / she starts waking at night again. This usually occurs around 6 months old and is often part normal development called separation anxiety, when a baby does not understand that separations are temporary.
