Clarice Cliff

Biography
The ancestors of the family had moved to the Castle Eccleshall area Tunstall at about 1725. When Clarice his house was born in Meir Street, a terrace of modest houses, but Tunstall was in fact a little better part of Stoke on Trent. Cliff's father Harry worked in cast local iron Tunstall, his mother washed clothes for Ann supplement family income, and had seven children.
Cliff was sent to a school other than their brothers and sisters, and this may be his guest more independent approach to her career and lifestyle standards nonstandard Stoke on Trent. We know that after school aunts Cliff paintresses who were completing a local pottery business, and has also done book-MCH models at school.
The family size means that, in 1906, moved the cliffs in a big house on the adjacent street Edward, where, as the children have left school (13 years), were able to increase family income, so never been the subject of intense events that affected many in the ceramic due to the high unemployment rate.
Race
At the age of 13, Cliff started to work in the ceramic industry. His first job was as a gilder, add lines of gold, the traditional conservation. Once you have mastered what she changed working to learn freehand painting at another potbank at the same time art and sculpture in the study of the Burslem School of Art at night.
In 1916, Cliff took the unusual decision to go factory Wilkinson AJ Newport, Burslem, to improve their career opportunities. This required a long commute. It was an unusual start in an unusual context, the youngest women in the Staffordshire potteries were in "Young wages, and have mastered a particular task, stayed with that to maximize their income. However, Cliff was ambitious and skills learned in the forms of modeling and vases, gold ornaments, holding fashion books and painted by hand: exponent enamel (fill in the outline color) and bands (stripes on the radial plates or vessels). In the 1920s Jack Walker supervisor Cliff to the attention of one of the two factory owners, Colley Shorter, who won with his brother Guy. Colley shortest was 17 years older than Cliff, and therefore play an important role in developing their skills and ideas, later her husband.
The first impression "ring Bizarre items used in early 1928 Clarice Cliff 1936, in various styles.
Cliff got a second lesson to AJ Wilkinson in 1924 (when he was 25 years), mainly as a modeler, but also designers worked with the facilities and Fred Butler, John Ridgway. They preservative, utensils Victorian – Butler had been the designer for over 20 years in that time. Finally, the range Peñasco range of knowledge has been recognized and in 1927 gave his own studio in nearby Newport Pottery shorts he bought in 1920. Here, Cliff was allowed to decorate some of the bad old "Gloster" (white) models in their own articles of hand. For these are used in nail color ice, which has a better range of underglaze colors.
It covered the imperfections in simple patterns of triangles, in a style he called "unusual." The first examples had a lunar hand painted, usually in a painting of rust, "Bizarre by Clarice Cliff, sometimes with 'Newport Pottery" below. To the surprise of the leaders of the vendor Ewart Oakes, when he took a car from a major distributor, was immediately popular. Clarice has been given a young painter Gladys Scarlett help with ceramics, and soon a more professional "has been stamped, signed facsimile Hand Painted Cliff Clarice Cliff Bizarre proclaimed, Newport Pottery England.
Early Original Rare jug-shaped pattern of Athens
This was ringing in the derivation fact that strangers used as generic name for its entire model range, so the plant then refers the first original pieces in simple triangles Bizarre.
In March 1927 more Colley short (who acted largely independently of his brother Guy), Cliff sent to the Royal College of Art in Kensington, London for two brief periods in March and May These dates are recorded at the Royal College of Art and files have also been recalled by Gladys Scarlett (1982) and was briefly alone in Newport to paint "New Issues" strangers.
pattern 'of Ravel in the conical pot of coffee, sugar and cream – 1930
In 1927, Cliff was born forms of credit, which designed, as a flower holder Viking ship, but their models for the plant is registered in the trade journal from 1923 to 1924. The forms from 1929 had an influence more 'modern' are often angular and geometric, and others are what is later called art deco. Abstract and cubist patterns appeared on these forms, such as Ravel 1929 (seen in ceramics Cliff conical shape), which has a summary sheet of floral and composer. The image shows a conical coffee and sugar bowl and cream with four triangular feet, other form of ideas rather strange that Cliff proved popular with customers in 1930. Ravel was occurring between 1929 and until at least 1935.
In 1928, Clarice occurred simple but clever pattern Crocus flowers hand painted orange, blue and purple, each flower you with confidence is built up shots. Then, the green leaves were taking part added backwards, and make fine lines between the flowers. As established by the individual strokes, the model was clearly Crocus completely hand painted, and vibrant colors immediately attracted significant sales.
Crocus 1928-1963 model
Initially, Clarice was just a young designer to produce Crocus, Ethel Barrow. But as the Orders flooded in 1930 a decoration shop "by itself was created under the floor of the building that housed the" stop Bizarre, Ethel and became responsible training young people how paintresses model. Twenty young women painted, but nothing Crocus 5 1 / 2 days a week for much of the decade 1930. Crocus was unusual in that it has product in both dishes, tea and coffeeware and "chimeras" manufactured novelty items mostly gifts. The model has many variations of color, including purple Crocus (1932) Blue Crocus (1935), Crocus Sungleam (1935) Spring Crocus. It has even been produced after the war, Clarice Cliff pieces with marks made final in 1963, despite mid-winter (which bought the plant) has been operating until recently as Paint It also 1968.
In 1929, the design team, Cliff had grown to a team of around 70 young painters, mainly women (called "Bizarre girls") but four children – the goods, hand-painted under his direction. Many of these workers were found in 1980 and 1990 which amounted to over 100. Their names and work to Clarice Cliff was recorded on the centenary of the book.
1930 Lugano applied
Plant produced a series of small leaves, printed in color (very usual at the time) that could be obtained by mail or picked up by distributors. The promotion system was clearly a success as a young man was an employee whose sole function was put in sealed envelopes sent brochures aimed at the plant. At this time, many women bought pottery by "correspondence" of advertising in magazines. The series of booklets, each covering a number of pieces in a similar style or combination of colors, including Bizarre, Fantastic, deletions, applied, inspiration, Crocus and Gayday and others. The original announcement of the models used, only two, Lucerne, Lugano, but the prolific Cliff ability to produce new models is demonstrated the fact that in 1932 the range was applied to 14 models: Avignon, Windmill, Red Tree, romance, Palermo, Flores, Caravan, Birds of Paradise, the Garden of Etna Eden and the monsoon in the two most original. The model applied Lugano shown to the left on a plate wall 10 inches (250 mm), with (inset) mark Bizarre print and a large hand-painted name, as so often in these ceramics. Applied, with more intense coloration, showed long-term to be one of the most ranges sought after Cliff.
pattern of 'Red Autumn "1930
The range Fantasque evolved between 1928 and 1934 and led the summaries or landscapes of houses and trees, and some Art Deco-inspired models. The first structure was landscape trees and House Fantasque and sold well from 1930 to at least 1934. However, it was a little later more sophisticated model launched in the autumn of 1930, which was to demonstrate the most versatile and popular. Created originally red (coral) green and black in 1930, since 1931 many color variations appeared. The rarest is red, shows a wall plate 13 inch (330 mm) but the version sold most of the time was a tree with blue green and yellow. All these changes were particularly collection.
In 1930, Cliff was appointed artistic director Newport Pottery and AJ Wilkinson, the two neighboring factories that produce their garments. Her work involved spending more time with Colley Shorter, and it gradually became in a matter, conducted in secret. The pair worked closely in the education of "Bizarre Ware" to attract buyers' attention in the midst of a financial depression, and looking smart and a great vision, short Colley registered on behalf of Clarice, and even some of its forms. It was his ability to develop both models and forms that had to go on the cliff above other top designers in the pottery of Staffordshire at this time. Their modeling first time in the mid 20s was stylized characters people, ducks, flowers relief items Davenport, 1925. But in 1929, while the color began Cubist landscape and facilities, modeling, Cliff took a new style. This has been influenced by Europeans original DSNY Brothers Ttard, Josef Hoffmann and others, who had seen in design reviews, including "Furniture and Dcoration.
Between 1929 and 1935, Cliff has published a large number of lines in shape, including conical Good Day / Biarritz, Stamford, Eton, narcissus, and Trieste. In each of these had tea and coffee forms of conservation, but the first two were so popular that barrels biscuit, sugar sieve, bowls and vases were made to extend the range. Good Day 20 forms were created in 1933, with about 10 more added in 1934. There were also many other innovative ways glasses, bowls and "fantasies", as the lining of the vessel, and the vase of flowers tube (now rare) Lido Lady Ashtray and age of jazz musicians and dancers.
1930 models: a melon-shaped vase of 14, and the circle of trees in a coffee Eton
Thanks the depth of depression Cliff continued to sell goods in volume to that high prices are yet. His grotesque and capricious items were sold in America North, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, but not in continental Europe. Great Britain many top London stores sold, including Harrods. Some of the other shareholders in London have long since closed, but the list is impressive: "Maple & Co., Lawley, Bon Marché, John Lewis, Peter Robinson, Selfridges, John Barker & Co., warring and Gillow and Gorringe. But existing orders in the period confirm that the equipment was never sold Bizarre Woolworths, as some have mistakenly indicated.
More scandalous reasons, colorful, such as melons and the circle of trees appeared in 1930. Cliff devised many ways market these; manifestations paint shop, including Cliff chose only the finest of its most famous and lesser paintresses and had the idea that we pay great 1930 to approve celebrity ceramics. This was done in two magazine articles and appearances in department stores. Celebrities include "the actress Adrienne Allen, Marion Lorne, Marie Tempest, the BBC presenter Christopher Stone, Bobby Howes musical. Even Sir Malcolm Campbell, who had broken the world record for land speed seemed promotion to the First Avenue Hotel, London in 1930.
the overall impact of Cliff explained by a story in the "Pasadena Evening Post" in California. He saw a horse with five feet high "Bizarre made of ceramic that have been made to promote ceramics in Britain. It was in this article, Cliff did what has become his sentence known for: Having a bit of pleasure in my work does not make me no less of an artist, and people who appreciate the truly beautiful ceramic creations and original with no fear innocent pranks
Between 1932 and 1934, Cliff was artistic director of a project, about 30 artists of the time (who are invited by the Prince of Wales) to promote good design in the arts of the table. Artists "in the examples of the clay products industry were under his direction, and artists including names notables as Duncan Grant, Paul Nash, Barbara Hepworth, Vanessa Bell and Laura Knight Dame. The modern project "The Art of the Table" was launched in Harrods in London October 1934, but received a lukewarm reception from both the public and the press, but at the same time, Cliff's own sales models and forms were abundant in the world.

Cliff designs are very stylized and interpreted in strong colors, as the model 1933 in Honolulu. The trees are dotted red (coral), orange and yellow. Cliff is a variation of colors in the trees, simply by changing to shades blue and pink, and what was then called Rudyard after a local Staffordshire beauty spot.
Clarice Cliff fame and success in the 1930s is difficult fully appreciate the time but this time there was no such thing as "professional women. The publicity given in the national press was unprecedented. A study by a doctoral student at the press of the period between 1928 and 1936 '360 contains articles on Cliff and his work has been published in the press, women's magazines, periodicals national and local. This has been put into context when he said that during the same period, Susie Cooper, another ceramist and designer, Staffordshire, was "less than 20 comments All Bar One in the press.

Despite all the publicity it has received, Cliff was quite shy of the camera, and in most cases, images of their creations were the women's magazine that dominated the day. An informal sample image was taken Cliff where a dealer in South Africa Articles, Werner brothers visited the factory on a shopping trip. Cliff is seen with the 3 year old daughter and wife of the dealer. After Cliff visiting her daughter sent a gift of tea to a child painted miniatures any model of Honolulu.
In the mid-30s and tastes have changed greatly inspired conservation was in vogue. My Garden series issued since 1934 has opened the way, with small flowers shaped like a mango, or the basis on the most rounded. They were all painted bright colors – the body of the merchandise was covered with thin washes of color – "Verdant Green" Sunrise yellow and so on. This range includes vases, bowls, jugs, barrels of crackers, gifts and proved very popular. He has produced several muted colors, just before the war began in 1939.
A record of 1935 shows the original factory size and diversity of consumption model my garden
Other forms modeled 1937 included "raffia", based on traditional Indian baskets, decorated in a style similar to small blocks of color. More popular was strongly inspired by the collection of pottery, jugs and bowls shaped corn and fruit. After the war, this range has been heavily marketed in North America (Very patriotic) than England. This model later conservation attracts relatively low prices at auction.
In 1940, after the death of Ann Shorter, Colley's wife, married Cliff and moved to his house in Chetwynd House Clayton, Staffordshire. The Arts and Crafts house was designed in 1899 and was among the first orders of British Architects Parker and Unwin, Barry Parker Raymond Unwin, who were heavily involved in the project from Welwyn Garden City.
During the Second World War that the plain white ceramic (utility ceramics) has been authorized by the law in time of war, and then helped manage Cliff pottery, but was unable to continue the design work. Instead, she focused her creative talents to landscaping and house massive garden 4 acres (16,000 m2), in Chetwynd became his passion shared with Shorter.
After the war, but Cliff was an opportunity for those nostalgic for the "Bizarre", as shown by personal letters to friends, appeared be realistic and accept the taste of commercial products has been conservative. Clarice seemed to enjoy playing a minor role in the plant, knowing that she could not resume those days crazy thirties. Much of the post production of pottery was to Australia, New Zealand or the United States, where the taste of the dishes was formal in the traditional patterns, like English instead of models so that suppression Tonquin and established the reputation of Cliff, so not to return to creative work. The ceramic post War has little value at auction.
Newport Pottery and continued AJWilkinson items are sold under the name of Cliff's death in 1963, Colley was shorter Cliff to sell the plant of the Winter Solstice in 1964 and retired again, and some as a prisoner. However, since December 1971-January 1972, the first exhibition Clarice Cliff pottery took place in Brighton, East Sussex. Cliff feedback resistance to the catalog, but declined an invitation to attend the opening. The exposure was driven by enthusiastic collectors, including Martin Battersby, a devotee of 20 years and the design of 30 years, the first author to publish this period of great works, and an avid Cliff pottery. Then, October 23, Cliff died suddenly at Chetwynd House. The exhibition and book published for the first time in 1976 the private sector "Clarice Cliff 'by Peter Wentworth-sheilds and Kay Johnson (The publication Odeon) marked the beginning of a major revival interest in the work of Cliff, which has remained sought by collectors of Art Deco style pottery ever since.

In 1982, the Clarice Cliff Collectors Club was originally trained and promoted to her and her work throughout the world. The founder the club had called the night in Staffordshire Sentinel for all those who worked with Cliff to communicate with him and was happy when he met with 28 former employees. But girls who call themselves the odd, "even in their 80s paintresses mid 70s and early Old Cliff were delighted with the interest in ceramics had hand painted 50 years earlier. Attended the annual meeting of the club, and must participate in television and radio largely on the cliff, and a mass of books that have appeared. Many of his memories have been recorded in the review of the Convention 1982-2004. The club also held meetings and exhibitions in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Stoke on Trent visited meetings Bizarre Shop-old pottery painting for the channel, Newport, Burslem 1987-1997, ironically the only building standing on the site. Unfortunately, demolished by Wedgwood in 1997, and the land sold to housing.
A series of mergers led to name holder Wedgwood Clarice Cliff, and from 1992-2002, there was a series of reproductions of the 1930 coins in high demand. These were made to a high quality and were produced in small quantities for sale to collectors who could not find (or perhaps time can not afford) the most striking parts of origin.
The first range of playback equipment from 1992 Wedgwood
The first sample included a bottle Gingerbread in the House and the bridge form a large cup of 14 in the loneliness, like a milk tea and sugar in Stamford Ceiling Rose Cottage, a conical bowl in tennis and a wall plate to the Lightning. 1996 2002 pieces were made for members of the UNFCCC and were also sold in the main rooms of Wedgwood. Hand painted pieces ceased production in 2002, but with articles printed (not hand-painted models) were made in large quantities by Wedgwood, during and after this period. These reproductions should not be confused with fake (some of which are located), the Wedgwood those are clearly marked as' Wedgwood Clarice Cliff. A woman born painter Alice, Cliff Andrews, after 80, was hired to attend the launch of the goods in the shops in Britain.
In the position of the mid-90s, Cliff as a great artist time was confirmed when it was included in major international reference works, the massive dictionary of art for the publisher Macmillan, and Knstlerlexikon by KG Saur Allgemeines Verlag.
The work of the UNFCCC has reached its peak with the Centennial Exhibition "Clarice Cliff Bizarre Art" Wedgwood Museum, Barlaston Stoke on Trent. Today, with 26 years of experience the club is based on the Internet (see below). Do not be confused with an organization that has used the same name in 2001 after in 1997. The UNFCCC was then a consultant to the BBC Radio 4 drama "The Odd Girl," written by Lizzie Slater has been described as "a thrilling drama exploring the spectacular Clarice Cliff increase in workshop of the Society of Art Director ~ showing how a working class girl from Staffordshire introduced modern art to the people. "Drama was broadcast in December 2000.
In 2002 Peter Wentworth-sheilds Kay and Johnson, authors of the original "Clarice Cliff" book of 1976 he returned to Britain to give a lecture at an event CCBC in Christie's South Kensington. They talked about the early days of collecting on your first purchase was "a jar of Athens BOWER for 7 shillings and six pence, 35 pence. Cliff Stone had actually spoken on the phone, but she refused to be interviewed. It was revealed that all had both Stanley Kubrick worked for when he wrote his book, Kay was Kubrick's personal assistant, and as a set designer Peter had been able to decorate a room in Orange mechanics with a frieze, designed on the basis of the original landscapes by Cliff.
The market for the collection of Clarice Cliff pottery is complex, it is still possible to find examples of Crocus, the reason the product is Cliff (1928-1964) for as little as 30-50. But rare combinations of shape and design to attract very high prices at auction. The world record price for a work of Clarice Cliff is owned by Christie's, South Kensington, London, which sold a 18-inch (460 mm) 'Load' (Wall plate) in the model of the Avenue of 39,500 in 2004. Shortly after the house of the same The auction sale of a vase, 8 inches (200 mm) in sunspots 20,000.
In 2008, Cliff pottery has continued to demonstrate both sought and appreciated. Despite the financial depression collectors continue to pay high prices for parts special. In Britain, Bonhams, London sold a Triple Hi "blue vase Firs 6000.
A rare form of autumn red vase sold by auctioneers 369-4900 Fielding, Stourbridge in the West Midlands and auctioneers Woolley and Wallis Salisbury sold a miniature 3-inch (76 mm) tall vase Café (used as a sample of a seller in 1930) for an impressive 3000.
On August 2, 2009 went to farmers in the Antiques Roadshow BBC and members of the Clarice Cliff Collection Original Club announced three plaques commemorating the life of Clarice Cliff and working in ceramics.
They were in their place of birth, Meir Street, Tunstall, his second home Edwards Street, Tunstall and the site of the Newport Pottery, Burslem Canal where his foreign elements was decorated. They were filmed by the BBC to screen in a program Antiques Roadshow special in December 2009.
In September 2009, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London opened its new galleries and ceramic work of Cliff was chosen to be included, "No two rooms in the collections are presented in the 20th century.
