Ameda, Lansinoh, or Playtex Breast Pump users?
Do you like your pump? What don’t you like about it? How often do you use it? Is it true it is a “closed system” so you can buy one second hand and not be worried about contamination? Thanks!
I recognize a lot of your concerns from when I was a first time pregnant lady. I might be able to give you some info…
First off, yes, you can buy a second-hand pump, as long as you either sanitize (via boiling water or high-temp dish washer or microwave steam sterilizer) the breast cups and any collection bottles that come with the pump, or buy new ones. It’s hard to imagine, but the breast milk never actually goes through the pump. The pump creates a suction, which causes a vaccuum-like action that pulls the breast milk out and down into the collection bottle. The tubes that attach the breast cup to the pump are essentially used to suck the air out of the breast cup, not the milk out of the breast. One you use one, the light bulb will go on like it did for me.
As for differences, I used three different pumps during my pumping time; the huge one they “loaned” me at the hospital while my daughter was re-admitted for high levels of bilirubin (jaundice); a hand-held version by evenflo; a medela “pump in style” that was second hand a friend of mine loaned me (she got it at a consignment sale).
The hospital one was very nice, whisper quiet and good variation on suction. (if you dial it up too much, it can hurt and cause bruising, but won’t necessarily affect milk flow)
The whisper-quiet feature of the one in the hospital made me realize once I got home, the Evenflo hand-held was WAAY too loud to be pumping in the middle of the night with a sleeping baby or a sleeping husband. I abandoned it immediately for the medela, and kept it on hand only for when I planned on being out of the house for more than 4 hours at a time.
The medela was great, and while slightly more bulky than the evenflo, in retrospect I would have been just as happy taking that out of the hosue. In fact, I went so far as to buy the automobile adapter for the power source so that I could do just that. I highly recommend the medela pump in style, and here is a website offering discounts if you want to buy a new one:

The “trick” with producing breast milk is that the more often you do it, the more you produce. I got very weary of the whole process and instead of doing it every 2-3 hours, I only did it about every 4 hours, then went to 6, then 8, and managed to dry up after only two months of pumping breast milk for my baby. She turned out just fine, but I would have like to produce a little longer for her, no matter the strain. It definitely makes you get your schedule set if you plan on pumping. Of course, I only pumped and then bottle-fed, I did not breast-feed directly. It was too frustrating for both me and my little one.
Good luck and hopefully I gave you some good information!
